Sezgin Online II Access
From now on, the MPIWG library has access to the Sezgin Online II.
Sezgin 2 Online (The Frankfurt Volumes) consists of volumes 10-17 of Fuat Sezgin's renowned Geschichte des arabischen Schrifttums (GAS), the largest and most modern bio-bibliography for the Arabic literary tradition in general, and the history of science and technology in the Islamic world in particular. These volumes were originally published in print in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany.
Sezgin 2 Online offers bio-bibliographical information about renowned figures (writers, poets, philosophers, physicians, scientists, linguists etc.) from the Islamic world in the following subjects:
• geography and cartography (vols. 10, 11, 12, 13)
• anthropogeography (vols. 14, 15)
• literature (vols. 16, 17)We’ve already access to Sezgin Online I which offers volumes 1-9.

New Exhibition of Rare Books

New Exhibition of Rare Books
The library has created a new exhibition of rare books from our collection on the subject of meteorology and we invite you to come and take a look.
Due to ongoing construction work, our rare book collection is still in a temporary location, but we are happy to present this small exhibition in the showcases at the main entrance to the library.
The topics cover relevant areas of the history of meteorology as follows:
- Showcase 1: Several 16th-century commentaries on Aristotle's treatise on meteorology;
- Showcase 2: Books from the 17th century on air changes, the sublunary sphere, and on atmospheric optical phenomena;
- Showcase 3: Descriptions of natural phenomena such as the volcanic eruption of Mount Etna 1669 or sky changes over the Baltic Sea due to the fire and smoke of battling fleets, published in the late 17th century, as well as a description of a rainbow as a meteorological and optical phenomena published 1888;
- Showcase 4: Publications on the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) from the 18th century;
- Showcase 5: Books on measuring instruments such as the hygrometer, barometer, or clepsydra from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The German Digital Library has put its complete newspaper archive with 4.5 million historical newspaper pages from around 300 years (1671 to 1950) online free of charge. A total of 247 titles have been digitised, and around 85 per cent of all pages are searchable in full text:

From now on, the MPIWG library has access to The Index of Medieval Art database, which catalogs on more than 26,000 subjects.
For a long time, you could only explore this vast taxonomy only by browsing the subject headings in alphabetical order. To make the data more accessible, the Index has developed a Subject Classification browse tool, which allows researchers to discover Index holdings by browsing through various categories of our hierarchical classification of subjects.
In this network, subjects are grouped under five top-level headings:

Society and Culture

Access to the Digital FAZ Archive
As of January 1, 2021 there is an MPG-wide contract for the product FAZ Corporate, which provides access to all publications from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitungen archive (since 1949).
The database contains more than seven million documents. The newspaper articles are available in HTML format, as an article facsimile in PDF format and as a newspaper page.

You can access the library catalogue and other electronic resources remotely by clicking on the special links in the big green boxes marked by a padlock on the library page.
You may encounter a login page that says "Enter your MPIWG username here" (with the URL login.travelmagic.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de). On this page you need to enter your MPIWG credentials.As an alternative you can also use our new Browser Add-on for Travel Magic. This add-on enables you to access electronic resources (e.g., e-journals) licensed by the library remotely from outside the institute even faster. Sign in with the same name and password you use to login on your computer at the institute. Please be aware, that you have to use it with Firefox! It does not work with any other browser so far nor does it work on mobile devices.

Contract with the Association of Computing Machinery for ACM Digital Library

Contract with the Association of Computing Machinery for ACM Digital Library
As of May 1, 2020 there is an MPG-wide contract with the Association of Computing Machinery for ACM Digital Library, which also includes open access publications by Max Planck Society (Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, MPG) authors.
The agreement enables full access to the ACM Digital Library, including ACM's archive and entire publication portfolio—magazines, conference reports, newsletters, websites, and multimedia files—as well as all ACM affiliated publications and the ACM Guide to Computing Literature. The only exception is the “ACM Book Series.”
Within the framework of the contract, publications with corresponding authors from the MPG have unlimited OA publication rights (CC-BY) for the entire ACM magazine portfolio, conference reports, and other publications for which ACM normally levy APCs.

The database is the authoritative resource for music research with over 52,000 articles written by nearly 9,000 scholars charting the diverse history, theory, and cultures of music around the globe. Based on work first published in 1879 and updated frequently, Grove has been in continuous publication for over a century and now publishes hundreds of new articles and revisions each year. Any comments about content or functions of the database are very welcome. Users from the MPIWG are registered automatically via IP.

"Granth Sanjeevani" Database Access
The library has now access to the database Granth Sanjeevani of The Asiatic Society of Mumbai. Please log in as "Max Planck Institute for the History of Science." Granth Sanjeevani has over 20,000 books, newspapers, manuscripts, maps, journals, government publications, and reports. Though the majority of books are in English, there are books in Sanskrit and other ancient and modern Indian languages and in European languages like Greek, Latin, Italian, German, and French.
