In this project, I will be exploring the complex ways in which time came to be understood, interpreted, and debated in China during the period of late antiquity. I will focus in particular on the emergence of millenarian and apocalyptic conceptions of time, and I will discuss the tensions between such conceptions and other understandings of time during this period. I will also compare these developments with those occurring during a similar time frame in the Mediterranean region. My hope is that the project will help to bring China into our larger comparative discussions of late antiquity.
