Margaret Haines

Long-term Senior Research Associate at the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, Villa I Tatti (Fellow 1975-6, Research Associate since 1986), art historian Margaret Haines (PhD Courtauld Institute 1975) has concentrated on studies in sculpture and the decorative arts and on the publication and interpretation of documentary sources for the early Florentine Renaissance, with special attention for matters of corporate patronage and the management of the worksite of the Florentine cathedral. Resident in Florence, Italy, she has held visiting faculty appointments at Princeton and Harvard University and has directed and curated the online edition of the sources of the Archive of the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, The Years of the Cupola/Gli anni della Cupola in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. She is presently coordinating the Studies section of this powerful resource, where systematic analysis of selected aspects of the documentation of Florence Cathedral in the vital years of 1419-1436 is published with fully integrated linking to the transcribed, edited sources, their images, virtually restored where necessary, and other illustrative material. The development of this site and the reflection on the chronology it traces in the priorities of the cathedral administration are the purpose of her residence at the MPIWG.
