Lakshmi Pradeep is a postdoctoral scholar in the Working Group “Reclaiming Turtles All the Way Down” in Department III at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. Her research explores questions of science and indigeneity in the coral islands of India through ethnographic methods. Prior to this, she was a post-doctoral research fellow at the International Institute for Asian Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands. She specializes in the fields of Environmental Anthropology, Science and Technology Studies, and Island Studies. She earned her PhD in South Asian Studies from the National University of Singapore in 2023, with a doctoral dissertation titled “Coral Worlds: An Anthropological Study of Island Protection and Conservation in Lakshadweep in the Indian Ocean.” She is currently adapting her dissertation into a book project. Additionally, she is a project partner in co-creating a “Sea Lexicon” for the Southern Collective, a project born from the Transregional Collaboratory on the Indian Ocean and previously funded by the Social Science Research Council.
