Andreas Mayer

Andreas Mayer studied musicology, sociology, and history and philosophy of science at the University of Vienna, University of Cambridge, and Bielefeld University, obtaining his PhD in 2001 with a dissertation on hypnosis and the emergence of psychoanalysis in the late nineteenth century. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the MPIWG in Department III (2000–2003), a Visiting Scholar at the Ecole Normale Supérieure des Mines in Paris (2004), a Wellcome Research Fellow in the History of Medicine at the University of Cambridge (2005–2007), and a DFG Heisenberg Fellow in 2013. In the same year, he obtained his habilitation (University of Bremen, Department of History). From 2007 to 2013, he was a Research Scholar at the MPIWG in Department II. Since 2014, he has been a Senior Researcher at the CNRS working at the Centre Alexandre Koyré – Histoire des Sciences et des Techniques in Paris.

His current research projects deal with the history of the human sciences from the late eighteenth century to the present, especially with the historical anthropology of intangible objects (such as dreams, bodily movements, gestures, and voices). He is affiliated with the master’s and graduate program of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, where he conducts seminars on the history of the human sciences on various levels.
