The Chinese local gazetteers had gone through various changes, and one aspect of these changes can be observed through the biographical sections of the local gazetteers from the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. The biographical section of the Baoqing Siming Gazetteer in 1227 focused on the official performance of individuals and adopted a family classification structure, reflecting the late Southern Song period when the biographical sections of fangzhi became a channel for a few successful literati families to showcase their achievements, thereby reinforcing the status of both the state and the literati. The political and social status of literati in the Yuan Dynasty faced challenges, and Han literati began to emphasize their status through their achievements in Confucian studies. The "local community documents" became an important operating mechanism, weakening the role of the state. In the year 1320, the biographical section of the Yanyou Siming Gazetteer adopted a special structure that highlighted the ten prominent Confucian literati from the Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, literati regained their political status within the state system, and the official performance became the focus once again in the biographical section of the Jiajing Ningbo Prefecture Gazetteer from 1560. The structure of this gazetteer was mainly based on the two sets of regulations for compiling gazetteers promulgated during the reign of the Ming Chengzu Emperor, reflecting the reestablishment of a cooperative relationship between the state and literati in the Ming Dynasty.
