Technocracy 3.0? Science-Policy Interrelations in the PR China, 1949-2021

Official ideas about the relationship between science and the political regime in China today are, arguably, different from conceptualizations discernible in the Mao era and the early Reform and Opening period after 1978. Looking at official statements and policies, in this talk, I will try to describe how the political structure, science policy, and structure of the science system in China today are interconnected in this apparent model of a modern autocracy of the twenty–first century.

About This Series

The LMRG Research Workshop is a venue for members of the Lise Meitner Research Group, "China in the Global System of Science," to share work in progress on an ongoing basis. It is an opportunity to raise questions, discuss methodological challenges, or get feedback on preliminary conclusions. We aim to create a supportive atmosphere that combines rigorous criticism with genuine curiosity.
