Measuring the Earth Discussion Group

We plan to continue our discussion about climatology and meteorology, focusing this time on how measurements and data have been and are used to produce forecasts and on the issue of probability in radically different moments in the history of the two disciplines. To initialize discussion we will read the following texts:

  • Katharine Anderson, Chapter 4: Precision and a Science of Probabilities, in Predicting the Weather : Victorians and the Science of Meteorology (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2005);
  • Eric Winsberg, Chapter 6: Probability, in Philosophy and Climate Science, first ed. (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2018).
Contact and Registration

In case you have questions about the discussion group, a specific session or registration, please feel free to contact Wilko Hardenberg.
