Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften at the Max Delbrück Center

On June 9, 2018, around 70 institutes in Berlin and Potsdam open their doors for the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften. The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science takes part this year in collaboration with the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin-Buch. Join us from 16:00 to try out our reconstructed Sanctorian balance, and hear our Institute's scholars discuss topics from the history of genetics to medical physics!

Address

Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association, Robert-Rössle-Straße 10, 13125 Berlin, Germany

Our Exhibition: Seventeenth-Century Fitbit (Main Corridor, 16:00–22:00)

We want to explore with you the origins of “self-quantifying,” a practice that is so common to us today. This leads us back to the turn of the seventeenth century. Here we follow the tracks of the physician Sanctorius Sanctorius, who developed a special balance to measure physiological processes in the human body. It was the first time in history that a balance was applied to the human body. Visit us in the main building of the Max Delbrück Center, travel with us in time, and experience Sanctorius' weighing chair yourself. But be warned: it'll need more than just a few clicks!
