Hermann Weyl's Neighbourhoods: "Spaces" in Mathematics, Physics, Subjectivity, and Historiography
- 14:00 to 16:00
- Seminar
- Max Planck Research Group (Final Theory Program)
- Norman Sieroka (Universität Bremen)
The talk will be about the interdisciplinary prominence of the concept of neighbourhood ("Umgebung") in the work of Weyl. It tracks different appearances of this notion in the contexts of mathematics, physics, and the theory of subjectivity, and describes them as related of one another. The historical and systematic background of this continuous reliance on (variations of) the concept of neighbourhood is traced back in part to Weyl's own "philosophical neighbourhood"; that is, to his own interaction with philosophers, especially with Fritz Medicus who introduced Weyl to the work of Fichte.

About This Series
The seminar series of the Research Group “Historical Epistemology of the Final Theory Program” runs once a month, usually on a Monday at 14:30 in the seminar room of the Villa (Harnackstraße 5). The talks deal primarily with the history, philosophy, and foundations of modern (post-WWII) physics or with wider epistemological questions related to the work of the group. There are no pre-circulated papers.
