Experimenting with Socio-Material Relations: Rural Meteorological Services and its Integration into Agricultural Practices in China

Jelena Große-Bley is interested in the ways that adaptation to climate change is grappled with in rural landscapes. In this colloquium session, we will discuss a draft chapter which is part of her dissertation project "Forging ahead under a changing sky: Meteorological services and crop seeds as climate change adaptation in China". The chapter explores how new uncertainties under ‘strange weather’ of climate change re-ignite old questions of how farmers and the meteorological system relate to each other in navigating biophysical uncertainties. The draft is focused on empirical materials that speak to changing practices of meteorological observation and weather forecasting in rural China, from the 1950s onward. Jelena is looking forward to discussing the draft and further develop its links to broader debates in relevant fields including socio-cultural anthropology, STS and China studies.

About This Series

The LMRG Colloquium is a venue for members and guests of the Lise Meitner Research Group, "China in the Global System of Science," to share their work in progress. It is an opportunity to raise questions, discuss methodological challenges, or get feedback on preliminary conclusions. We aim to create a supportive atmosphere that combines rigorous criticism with genuine curiosity.
